BEML is making a big move to help build more port and shipyard equipment at home.
It has teamed up with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries to bring in dedicated financial support for maritime manufacturing in India.
What’s happening: these partners will work together to design and make port cranes, including next-gen autonomous cranes, with production based in India. They’ll also handle installation, commissioning, and long-term support.
Why this matters right now: India’s ports have relied heavily on Chinese cranes, but that supply line took a hit after the government restricted state-owned firms from sourcing such equipment from China following border clashes.
This partnership is part of a wider push to reduce dependence and build a stronger local ecosystem, using public sector companies like BEML to team up with global leaders.
Quick context: HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering is a major shipbuilding group that builds ships and offshore platforms, and develops marine engines and green tech through its shipyards. It has also signed a separate MoU with Cochin Shipyard for long-term collaboration in shipbuilding.
