BHEL partnered with Norway-based Hystar to manufacture equipment in India that helps produce green hydrogen.
What are they making: the partnership focuses on Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers.
Think of an electrolyser as a machine that uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. When that electricity comes from renewable sources such as solar or wind, the hydrogen produced is called green hydrogen. It can help replace fossil fuels in industries such as steel, fertilisers, oil refining, shipping and heavy transport.
PEM is simply one type of electrolyser technology.
What’s the deal: BHEL and Hystar will gradually bring more of the manufacturing of these systems to India instead of relying entirely on imported equipment.
Hystar brings its PEM electrolyser technology, while BHEL brings its Indian manufacturing capabilities and ability to execute large projects.
Why it matters: earlier this year, BHEL partnered with thyssenkrupp nucera India for another type of technology called alkaline electrolysers.
With Hystar now covering PEM technology, BHEL says it is among the few Indian companies capable of offering both major types of electrolyser systems.
