HCLTech and Sarvam are building India's ₹14,257 crore AI engine

HCLTech is making one of India's biggest AI infrastructure bets yet, with plans to invest ₹14,257 crore to build its first AI Data Center in Odisha.

The deets: the company will set up the facility at the upcoming Odisha Sovereign AI Park in partnership with Sarvam AI and the Government of Odisha.

But this isn't just another data centre.

Why it matters: HCLTech wants to build what is known as sovereign AI

In simple words, it means developing AI infrastructure, computing power and AI models within India instead of depending on foreign companies.

As AI becomes central to everything from healthcare and banking to defence and public services, governments around the world are increasingly focusing on keeping sensitive data and AI capabilities within their own borders.

The how: the data centre will combine HCLTech's full-stack AI capabilities with Sarvam AI's foundation models to build sector-specific AI solutions for both private companies and government departments.

The partnership also plans to roll out multilingual AI services, helping deliver AI-powered applications to people across India in their native languages.

Zoom out: according to the Stanford AI Index 2026, India's AI talent concentration has jumped 120% since 2019, making it the second-fastest growing globally, just behind the UAE. The ranking measures how quickly the share of AI professionals on LinkedIn has grown in each country over the past six years.

The surge reflects rising investments in AI, a booming startup ecosystem and increasing demand for AI engineers across industries. With companies and governments pouring billions into AI infrastructure, India's talent pipeline is becoming one of its biggest competitive advantages.
