India, Germany eye $8 bn submarine deal

India and Germany are in talks for a $8 billion submarine manufacturing deal, as per source-based reports.

Note: this could become India’s largest-ever defence agreement if it goes through.

What’s the deal: Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will partner with state-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders to build submarines in India. Crucially, this deal will include technology transfer, something India has long pushed for in defence manufacturing.

Why this is big: this would be the first time India gets submarine-making technology, not just finished vessels. If the deal moves ahead, India may also drop plans to buy three more French submarines. The new submarines will come with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems.

In simple terms, this allows submarines to stay underwater much longer, making them harder to detect and more effective in long missions.

The submarines will strengthen India’s ability to patrol the Indian Ocean, especially as China expands its naval presence in the region.

Why Germany’s in: Berlin has ramped up defence manufacturing since the Ukraine war and is now more open to sharing advanced military tech. The deal also fits Germany’s aim to reduce India’s dependence on Russian weapons.

Zoom out: India has been nudging global defence firms to manufacture locally and share technology. Since 2020, the government has restricted imports of many defence platforms to force production into India, even though the country remains the world’s second-largest arms importer, still heavily reliant on Russia.
