Uber and JSW Group have partnered to develop and roll out India-focused EVs for multiple ride categories on Uber’s platform.
What is happening: the announcement follows Uber CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi’s five-day India visit, where he met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, and announced a data centre partnership with Adani Group.
Why this matters: Uber has been steadily expanding its EV ecosystem in India with partnerships with Tata Motors, Adani One and Refex Green Mobility.
But the partnership with JSW Group marks a bigger strategic shift, as the companies will jointly develop EVs purpose-built for India’s ride-hailing market, focusing on lower operating costs, efficient charging cycles and higher passenger throughput instead of retail consumer preferences.
The move aligns with the Government of India’s push towards green mobility and net-zero goals, and could eventually lead to multiple EV models tailored for Indian ride-hailing conditions.
