Welspun secures ₹7,300 crore highway contract. Here's what it means

Welspun Enterprises' subsidiary won a ₹7,300 crore contract to build the Pune-Shirur highway in Maharashtra.

The project will be carried out under a long-term agreement with the Maharashtra government and the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC).

Project details: the ₹7,300 crore project will build a 53.4-km, six-lane, partially elevated highway on the Pune-Shirur stretch of NH-753F, while also upgrading the existing road.

The company will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the highway for 29 years, including a four-year construction period, before handing it back to the government.

Why it matters: the highway will improve connectivity between Pune and Shirur, linking fast-growing hubs like Wagholi, Kharadi, Lonikand, Ranjangaon and Shikrapur. It is expected to reduce traffic, move freight faster and support one of Maharashtra's fastest-growing industrial corridors.

The order also comes after Welspun Corp's recent ₹1,400 crore pipeline contract, strengthening the group's infrastructure business.

With governments increasing spending on roads, power and logistics, the outlook for infrastructure companies remains strong. In fact, India's power EPC market is expected to grow by nearly $20.3 billion between 2023 and 2028, showing the size of the opportunity ahead.
