What does career growth mean to gen z?

What does career growth mean to gen z?

The old idea of career growth was simple: work hard, get promoted, earn more. Gen Z is adding another step to that equation - learn more.

A 2026 Naukri survey of more than 23,000 Gen Z professionals across 80+ industries found that 57% define career growth as learning new skills on the job. Only 21% see salary hikes and 12% promotions as the main measure of growth.

The same survey found that 81% prefer recognition through growth opportunities, while just 9% prefer public or private appreciation. So if a young employee does a good job, another “well done” might not be what they are looking for. A better project, more responsibility or the chance to learn something useful could matter more.

Money, of course, is still important.

Among Gen Z employees earning below ₹5 lakh a year, only 8% prefer monetary rewards as recognition. That rises to 28% for those earning ₹5–25 lakh. The higher the income, the more financial rewards start to matter.

But there is another reason skills are becoming such a big part of the conversation. The jobs themselves are changing. Deloitte’s 2026 India survey found that 93% of Gen Zs use AI in their day-to-day work, while 54% want more AI training.

At the same time, young Indians are hardly insulated from the financial pressures everyone else is dealing with. 54% said they have delayed major life decisions because of financial concerns, and more than 60% said housing affordability affects their career decisions.

So it isn't really a choice between money and learning. Young employees want the salary, the promotion and the better title. They just don't want to spend two or three years in a job without feeling like they have become better at something along the way.

That is probably the simplest way to read the data. For Gen Z, a good job isn't just one that pays you more. It should also leave you with something more than when you started.
