Your dream home is someone else’s business

Your dream home is someone else’s business

Buying a house is expensive. Then comes the fun part: painting the walls, redoing the bathroom, fixing the plumbing, upgrading the lights and somehow spending another few lakhs making the place feel like yours.

That’s where a whole bunch of listed Indian companies come in.

Start with the walls. Asian Paints, Berger Paints and Kansai Nerolac sell the colours that go into millions of Indian homes. India’s paints and coatings market was valued at around $10.46 billion in 2025, and is projected to reach $16.38 billion by 2030, according to the India Brand Equity Foundation.

Then there’s everything you don’t see. UltraTech Cement, Ambuja Cement and Shree Cement supply the material that holds buildings together. Astral, Supreme Industries and Prince Pipes make the pipes that keep water flowing where it should. Not the most glamorous products, perhaps, but try renovating a bathroom without them.

And once the basics are sorted, the spending gets more interesting. Kajaria Ceramics, Cera and Hindware cater to tiles and bathroom fittings. Polycab, Havells and Finolex Cables are in the business of wiring homes and powering everything inside them.

The scale of the market is hard to ignore. Deloitte estimates that India’s residential construction sector could grow from around $252 billion in FY25 to $350 billion by FY30. And the spending doesn’t stop when a new building is completed. Homes need repainting, kitchens get remodelled, old fittings are replaced and families upgrade as their budgets allow.

Of course, more construction doesn’t automatically mean bigger profits. Paint companies have to deal with raw material costs, cement makers are exposed to fuel and freight expenses, and every category has its own competition. A company can operate in a growing market and still disappoint investors.

But the next time someone complains about the cost of renovating a home, remember: that bill is revenue for someone else.

And on Dalal Street, there’s a listed company behind almost every line item.
