Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited - BHEL has entered into a long-term exclusive Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore-based Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies.
Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies is a Singapore-based company founded in 2003 and makes hydrogen fuel cells for a range of applications, including heavy-duty transportation.
What’s happening: Under the agreement, the two companies plan to develop a railway locomotive powered by hydrogen fuel cells, a zero-emission alternative to traditional diesel or electric trains. The deal includes a 10-year exclusivity period, giving BHEL a strategic entry into the hydrogen fuel technology space and opening up a new market segment in clean transportation.
Why it matters: the Indian Railways’ push for modernization and infrastructure upgrades opens a major opportunity for BHEL to deliver advanced locomotives, trainsets, signaling systems, and other cutting-edge rail technologies. Hydrogen fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity, emitting only water vapor and heat, making them a clean, sustainable solution for long-distance transportation while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The big picture: Indian Railways is poised to launch a fleet of green hydrogen-powered trains in the coming months, marking a pivotal step in the nation’s drive towards zero-emission, sustainable rail transport. Under the government's 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative, 35 hydrogen fuel cell trains are scheduled to be deployed across heritage and hilly routes.
