Government plans ₹25,000 crore export support package

The government is working on a support package of nearly ₹25,000 crore for exporters as part of the newly announced Export Promotion Mission - EPM.

The Export Promotion Mission seeks to enable broad-based, inclusive, and sustainable export growth by addressing bottlenecks faced by Indian exporters, especially MSMEs.

What’s happening: the package is aimed to boost outbound shipments over the next six years. The proposal, prepared by the commerce ministry has been sent to the expenditure finance committee - EFC of the finance ministry.

The EPM will have two sub-schemes designed to make credit more accessible and affordable for exporters. These include the Niryat Protsahan Scheme, with an outlay of over ₹10,000 crore, and the Niryat Disha scheme, with an allocation of over ₹14,500 crore.

Breaking it down: the Niryat Protsahan scheme will bridge exporters’ liquidity gaps with financing support, including ₹5,000+ crore in interest equalisation from FY25-31. It will also promote alternative trade finance and offer credit cards for e-commerce exporters.

The Niryat Disha scheme will strengthen export quality, global market access, branding, warehousing, and logistics, while building capacity to integrate more Indian firms into global value chains.

Worth noting: the move comes at a time when Indian exporters are facing fresh headwinds, including the US decision to hike tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 50%, effective August 27.
