Defence orders help BEL deliver steady quarter

Bharat Electronics delivered steady quarter, driven by strong execution of its massive defence order book. While Q1 revenue surged sharply, profit growth was relatively moderate as operating margins softened.

The numbers:

  • Net profit: ₹1,048 crore, up 8% YoY
  • Revenue: ₹5,533 crore, up 25% YoY
  • Total income: ₹5,700 crore vs ₹4,580 crore last year
  • Margin: 25%, down from 27.9% a year ago
  • Order book: ₹72,258 crore

Decoding numbers: as India’s defence spending continues to rise, the company has been steadily winning large orders from the Indian armed forces.

Revenue growth was driven by faster execution of existing defence projects. However, profit grew at a slower pace because operating margins slipped compared to last year, indicating higher costs and a different execution mix during the quarter.

What worked: ofcourse order book across products like radars, military communication systems, electronic defence equipment, aircraft electronics and protective gear against chemical and biological threats.

Alongside the earnings, the board also approved a proposal to increase the company’s authorised share capital from ₹750 crore to ₹1,000 crore.

It means the company has increased the limit on how many shares it can issue in the future. This doesn’t raise money immediately, but gives the company flexibility to issue more shares later if needed for growth or expansion.

One more update: BEL also reviewed the impact of the ongoing Israel conflict on its contracts with Israeli companies and said there is no material financial impact on its business at present. That’s an important reassurance because Israeli firms are key partners for several advanced defence technologies used by Indian manufacturers.

Zoom out: India is targeting ₹50,000 crore in defence exports by 2030, driven by rising global demand for military equipment.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said public sector defence companies are also seeing a surge in export orders, especially for artillery shells and ammunition.
