How much did investors make from Jio’s IPO?

Jio Platforms made a blockbuster stock-market debut on Wednesday. The shares listed at ₹1,358, compared with the IPO price of ₹1,119.

That is a gain of ₹239 per share, or 21.36%, on the first day.

How much did investors make: the profit depended on the category under which an investor applied:

- Retail investors: the minimum lot contained 12 shares. At ₹239 profit per share, one lot gained ₹2,868.

- Reliance shareholders: the minimum lot contained 23 shares. One lot gained ₹5,497.

This made Jio the best-performing listing among India’s five biggest IPOs.

Compared to other listings, LIC, Hyundai Motor India and Paytm had listed below their issue prices, while NSE offered investors a listing gain of only around 1%.

Why was the listing so strong: demand.

Jio offered shares worth ₹30,213 crore, but investors placed bids for more than 22 times the shares available.

The IPO received around 1.38 crore applications, becoming the first Indian public issue to cross the one-crore mark. It was also fully subscribed within around 100 minutes of opening.

By the numbers:

- Overall subscription: 22.19 times

- Institutional investors: 70.55 times

- Wealthy investors: 14 times

- Retail investors: 2.72 times

- Reliance shareholder category: 7.6 times

The ₹8,110-crore anchor portion attracted demand of more than ₹2.5 lakh cror which is over 30 times the shares available.

Jio’s valuation: at the IPO price, Jio was valued at around ₹10.3 lakh crore.

At its listing price, that jumped to approximately ₹12.5–12.6 lakh crore, making Jio India’s second-most valuable listed company.

The listing also pushed Jio’s market value above Bharti Airtel’s, making it India’s most valuable telecom company.

Market capitalisation simply means the stock market’s total value for a company. It is calculated by multiplying the share price by the total number of shares.

Zoom out: the listing has also placed Jio in a small global club of founder-led companies including Meta, Alibaba and SpaceX that were valued above $100 billion at the time of their IPOs.

This event also comes during a record year for India’s IPO market. India has hosted 246 listings so far in 2026, making it the world’s busiest market by number of deals.
