Prada is launching $881 Kolhapuri-style sandals, now officially made in India.
What’s happening: this comes months after Prada faced backlash for showcasing similar designs without credit at a Milan fashion show. The brand is now acknowledging the roots and working directly with Indian artisans.
Note: Kolhapuri chappals are officially recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, meaning their design and origin are legally protected as part of India’s traditional crafts.
More details: Prada will produce around 2,000 pairs in Maharashtra and Karnataka, blending local craftsmanship with its global luxury positioning. The sandals will be sold across 40 Prada stores worldwide and online, turning a traditional Indian design into a premium global product.
The fix: beyond just selling sandals, Prada is setting up a 3-year training program for artisans across key Kolhapuri districts, aiming to upskill around 180 craftsmen in collaboration with Indian design institutes.
