The commodity that keeps India moving

The commodity that keeps India moving

Every time someone buys a new car, a lot of businesses make money. The car company sells a vehicle. The dealer earns a commission. The bank finances the loan. But there's one industry that benefits almost every single time, and most of us hardly notice it.

Rubber.

Think about it. Every car, truck, bus and bike needs tyres. And tyres account for nearly three quarters of India's natural rubber consumption. So when more vehicles hit the road, the demand for rubber goes up too.

That's why this industry deserves a little more attention.

For years, Kerala has been the heart of India's rubber production. But that is slowly changing. States like Tripura and Assam are producing more rubber every year as the government expands plantations across the North East through Project INROAD.

The idea is simple: produce more rubber at home and rely a little less on imports. Even with that push, India still doesn't grow enough rubber to meet its own demand.

The country produced about 8.75 lakh tonnes of natural rubber in FY25, but consumption was even higher. That gap is filled through imports, making global rubber prices important for Indian manufacturers.

You can see that impact almost immediately. When rubber prices rise, tyre companies often face higher costs. Companies like MRF, CEAT, Apollo Tyres and Balkrishna Industries either absorb those costs or pass them on by increasing tyre prices.

And that's why rubber isn't just a farming story.

It's connected to automobiles, logistics, infrastructure and manufacturing. If India keeps building more roads, selling more vehicles and expanding its economy, the need for rubber is only likely to grow.

India's rubber industry isn't just growing trees. It's supporting one of the country's largest manufacturing value chains. And as that value chain grows, so will the importance of the industry behind it.
