Semiconductors get a ₹4,000 crore pushThe government has approved two new semiconductor projects worth nearly ₹4,000 crore under the first phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
The deets: these projects will be executed by Crystal Matrix (₹3,068 crore) and Suchi Semicon (₹868 crore).
Crystal Matrix will manufacture Gallium Nitride (GaN) chip wafers used in advanced display technologies like mini and micro LEDs, while Suchi Semicon will handle packaging of semiconductor chips used in everyday appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners, leveraging its existing facility in Surat.
These approvals mark the final two projects under ISM’s first phase, taking the total to 12 semiconductor manufacturing and packaging units with a combined investment of ₹1.64 lakh crore.
Big picture: the broader goal is to build a strong, self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem in India, supported by design infrastructure across 300+ academic institutions and over 100 startups.
With several projects already underway, including Micron’s chip assembly and packaging unit in Gujarat, the initiative aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing, reduce import dependence, and position India as a growing hub in the global semiconductor value chain.
